Combining this is not a contradiction for us - it spurs us on to new top performances every day. Our goal is to always be one step ahead without forgetting our roots. With our new tradition page on the WEGMANN automotive website, we look back on the long history and versatility of our company: from a wagon factory to the world market leader for balancing weights.
The company was founded in 1882 under the name "Casseler Waggonfabrik von Wegmann, Harkort & Co.". At this time the company produced coal, tank and passenger cars. Just one year after its foundation, the young company consisted of 210 employees. In 1886 the company was renamed "Wegmann & Co" - this year 677 wagons were manufactured with over 520 employees. In the anniversary year 1907, WEGMANN already held a market share of 10% of the total German wagon production. In 1912, 37-year-old August Bode was appointed managing director of the technical division. He had joined the wagon factory in 1889 as a highly motivated apprentice.
Innovation and progress were already the focus of attention at that time: in the mid-1950s the railway industry was increasingly threatened by cars - at WEGMANN, however, this change was seen as an opportunity: a wagon was designed that could accommodate up to 7 cars on two floors. The idea of simply taking the car with you as luggage was completely new. Eight years later the company split into two independent companies: Wegmann & Co. and Gebrüder Bode & Co. In 1979 Wegmann & Co. was passed on to Manfred and Wolfgang Bode, the sons of Fritz Bode.
The WEGMANN automotive company repeatedly proved its ability to change over the decades - today it consists of 3 business units that set standards worldwide. WEGMANN automotive looks back on a particularly long tradition with the precision manufacture of balancing weights, valves and other products. Today, we are the world market leader with our products.
